MHz Range Integrated Circuit for Battery Cell Balancing with Closed Loop ZVS Control

چکیده :
This paper presents an integrated circuit for voltage balancing between adjacent cells in a series-connected lithium-ion battery pack. A high-frequency hybrid resonant converter is employed to reduce the size of passive components such as inductors and capacitors, while achieving zero-voltage switching (ZVS) to minimize switching loss. A closed-loop control mechanism is introduced to dynamically adjust the switching frequency and guarantee ZVS operation, despite variations in oscillator frequency caused by process, supply voltage, and temperature (PVT), as well as fabrication tolerances in passive components. An additional advantage of this control strategy is its ability to limit the current through the converter’s switches, preventing excessive current density within the IC. The proposed design eliminates the need for current sensing and inter-module communication, making it scalable and well-suited for modular battery management systems. Simulation results in a 180 nm CMOS process confirm the system’s robustness and efficiency under realistic design uncertainties.
