A Gain Enhancement Method Based on Negative Miller-C for Interstage Amplifiers in Pipeline ADCs

چکیده :
The interstage gain amplifiers in pipeline stages play a critical role in the overall performance of the converter, both in terms of speed and accuracy. For high-resolution ADCs, once the bits are sub-ranged in each stage, the interstage amplifiers must amplify the residue with sufficient accuracy to represent the remaining bits within the allocated time. The conventional approach involves designing high-gain amplifiers to improve precision by increasing the loop gain in a closed-loop configuration. However, using cascode devices to achieve high DC gain becomes impractical in modern technologies with low supply voltages, due to limited voltage headroom and reduced output swing—resulting in a lower dynamic range. In this work, we propose a novel technique to improve the precision of closed-loop amplifiers with low DC gain, without causing a significant reduction in speed. A two-stage amplifier with enhanced accuracy has been designed and simulated in 0.18 µm CMOS technology to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
